49ers add host of impact players despite trading out of first round in mock for 2024 NFL Draft

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the most stacked rosters in the NFL and, as such, the conventional wisdom is they will not have room for all of their 10 draft picks on the roster.
As a result, there is plenty of talk they could trade up from their draft slot of 31 in the first round to give themselves a better shot of a premium talent while surrendering some of their capital later in the draft.
But there could also be value in the 49ers, who haven't had a first-round pick since 2021, dropping out of the opening round. I explore that scenario in this mock, which sees the 49ers still add a host of impact players on both sides of the ball.
The trade down:
The 49ers send pick 31 and pick 251 in the seventh round to the New York Jets. In return, the Niners receive pick 45, which the simulator had the Jets receiving in an earlier trade with the New Orleans Saints, and pick 72 in the third round.
Round 2, Pick 45: Chris Braswell, EDGE, Alabama
I had the 49ers picking Braswell in a previous mock, and it’s a selection I’m happy to make again here. San Francisco has Leonard Floyd as the starter across from Nick Bosa at edge for the short term, but the Niners need a long-term solution. Braswell, with his excellent get-off, ability to win with speed to power, well-rounded set of moves and enticing room to grow, fits the bill.
Round 2, Pick 63: Ja'Lynn Polk, WR, Washington
The 49ers aren’t reported as having held a visit with Polk, but he’s a receiver with a host of traits Kyle Shanahan should love. While he doesn’t have the long speed to consistently maintain separation, Polk wins with impressive burst off the line and great detail as a route-runner, using his stop-start quickness to tremendous effect.
On top of that, Polk is a ball-winner who would give the 49ers contested-catch upside not currently on the depth chart. At the bottom of the second round, he’s an excellent value pick.
Round 3, Pick 72: Kris Jenkins, DT, Michigan
A potential steal at this point in the draft as the 49ers land one of the better interior defensive linemen in the class. Jenkins is an excellent run defender who excels at holding his ground at the point of attack and stacking and shedding blockers to find the football. He needs to become more consistent as a pass rusher, but he is a prospect with the skill set to have a big impact year one.
Round 3, Pick 94: Calen Bullock, S, USC
San Francisco did host a top-30 visit with Bullock, a rangy safety whose ability to excel playing single-high could allow the Niners to diversify their coverages more in 2024. Bullock is a playmaker who had nine interceptions in college, including a career-high five in 2022.
Trade Up
The 49ers move up in the fourth round. Sending picks 124 and 135 to the Carolina Panthers to get up to 101.
Round 4, Pick 101: Blake Fisher, OT, Notre Dame
It might be the fourth round, but this pick sees the 49ers land a potential year-one starter at right tackle. Fisher has 27 starts to his name in college and projects as a perfect fit for a 49er run game that blends zone and gap scheme plays. Fisher shows impressive power to drive defenders off the ball on gap scheme runs and has enough upside in space to excel as a zone blocker, displaying impressive awareness in finding additional work at the second level after executing combo blocks.
As a pass protector, Fisher has length, impressive foot speed and an ability to consistently anchor against bull rushes. He may not be regarded as one of the top tackles, but Fisher can instantly compete with Colton McKivitz to start at right tackle.
Another trade
The 49ers move back five spots from pick 132 in the fourth round, dropping into the fifth and netting pick 137 as well as pick 180 while also sending pick 215 in the sixth to the New England Patriots.
Round 5, Pick 137: Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State
The Niners have a clear need at tight end to take some of the burden off George Kittle despite selecting two, Cameron Latu and Brayden Willis, in last year’s draft.
Bell is not your typical tight end. Like many, he can excel from a variety of alignments, having played as an outside receiver, in the slot, in-line and as a H-back. However, on top of that, he also has significant experience running the ball out of the backfield from his time at South Carolina prior to transferring to Florida State.
As a runner, Bell boasts explosiveness, vision, elusiveness and contact balance, his skills in that regard making him a candidate to fill the dual TE-RB role the 49ers once had pegged for Jalen Hurd before injuries ruined his career.
Round 5, Pick 180: Marist Liufau, LB Notre Dame
San Francisco goes back to South Bend for another pick and fills the need for linebacker depth with an extremely intriguing day-three pick.
Liufau has the speed the 49ers look for among their linebackers and has demonstrated great versatility in being able to stop the run, rush the passer and make plays in coverage. One the most imposing hitters in the class, the Niners would be delighted to get a player with Liufau’s experience and refined skill set.
Round 6, Pick 211: Decamerion Richardson, CB, Mississippi State
Let’s finish off with another top-30 visit pick. The 49ers have good cornerback depth after adding Isaac Yiadom and Rock Ya-Sin, but with most of their cornerback depth chart set for free agency next season, it makes sense to add to the position in the draft.
Richardson has great physical traits with an excellent combination of size and speed at a little over 6ft 2in and 188 pounds with a 40-yard dash of 4.34 seconds. Coming off a strong final season with the Bulldogs in which he had seven pass breakups, Richardson would be entering an ideal spot in which to develop while using that speed on special teams as a rookie.

He’s a remarkable prospect.
