Before Nick Bosa agreed his record-breaking contract extension on Wednesday, the question was whether he would be signed in time to play for the 49ers in Week 1 against the Steelers.

In his press conference moments after learning of the news, Kyle Shanahan was asked if there was any way the reigning Defensive Player of the Year would not feature in the season opener after his holdout came to an end.

The 49ers head coach revealed that it would take a highly unlikely turn of events for that to happen.

"There is question [whether he'll be in uniform] because we haven't seen him," said Shanahan. "But I think you guys know how I'm talking. He'd have to have a beer belly and be out of shape or something. That's not in Bosa's DNA."

Unlike Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who said on Tuesday he was preparing Pittsburgh to face Bosa, Shanahan had been readying his team for playing without their star edge rusher.

He added:

"You try not to think about it much because it's not really in my control and you've just got to let the process play itself out. Once it got through the weekend I just kind of got it in my mind that we weren't playing with him. If I would have gone back and forth I would have been miserable so I just decided we weren't. I think our team was ready to not, that was our mindset. It was a hell of a bonus just to get told that coming in here. Obviously we're all excited about it."

Shanahan revealed Bosa was attempting to get to the 49ers' facility on Wednesday in the hope of getting some time on the practice field. When asked how many snaps Bosa could play against Pittsburgh, Shanahan had another comedic response.

"How many snaps are in the game? I'm just joking," was his tongue-in-cheek reply.

"We've got to see when he gets here, I know Nick will come in shape, I know he'll be good. It would be great if he could get in something today. We'll be smart with it and that will be based on the next two and a half practices."
