The end of the last Super Bowl matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs remains an extremely controversial one in the eyes of many Niners fans, many of whom remain adamant Nick Bosa was held on the play that changed the course of that game.
For the Chiefs, the words 'jet chip wasp' live in franchise legend, for the 49ers they live in infamy. Tyreek Hill's 44-yard reception from Patrick Mahomes on third and 15 sparked the Chiefs' comeback from a 20-10 fourth-quarter deficit to prevail 31-20 with a 21-point barrage that happened across the final six minutes and change of an absorbing contest.
Yet many on the Niners side of things believe the play should have never stood, feeling there should have been a flag on Eric Fisher for holding Bosa.
Four years on, Bosa has a chance for revenge in Super Bowl 58, as the 49ers prepare to face Mahomes and the Chiefs again in Las Vegas a week from Sunday.
Many of the cast of characters are different from Super Bowl 54 in Miami, with the Chiefs' tackle spots now occupied by Jawaan Taylor on the right side and Donovan Smith on the left side.
But the referee is the same, with Bill Vinovich once again the head official as he was in February 2020, and Bosa expects to once again be in positions where he could draw flags that put the Chiefs behind the sticks.
Asked what he's seen from Taylor and Smith, Bosa replied: "They hold a lot."
Bosa, who said he starts sweating when he watches that agonizing loss back, was also pressed on his view of the controversy on the play that tilted things in the wrong direction in the Niners' last Super Bowl appearance.
"I don't think they had the back view," said Bosa when asked if he was held. "But yeah, Eric Fisher."
As was the case in Super Bowl 54, the matchup with the Chiefs tackles appears to be in Bosa's favor. For the 49ers to right the wrong of four years ago, he needs to make that advantage count, either in the form of impactful pressures or in flags the Niners hope will be more willingly thrown by Vinovich's crew this time around.
