The wait is finally over. The 49ers and Nick Bosa have reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension, and it's one that makes him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers and Bosa have agreed on a five-year extension worth $170 million with $122.5 million guaranteed.
The contract will pay Bosa an average of $34 million a year, surpassing Aaron Donald for the highest average annual value paid to a defensive player.
It brings an end to a protracted contract holdout that has seen Bosa miss the entirety of training camp and preseason, raising questions about how ready he will be for the 49ers' season opener with the Steelers in Pittsburgh on Sept. 10.
Renowned for keeping himself in excellent shape, Bosa can now focus on dispelling any such concerns and making an immediate impact in his fifth season in the league.
The second overall pick of the 49ers in 2019, Bosa was named Defensive Player of the Year last season after a dominant campaign in which he racked up 18.5 sacks.
With more help on the defensive line this year following the Niners' blockbuster signing of Javon Hargrave to improve the pass rush from the interior, Bosa could be in a position to potentially improve on that tally with the benefit of more one-on-one matchups.
Should that prove to be the case, the most expensive contract for a defensive player in NFL history will quickly look like a bargain for San Francisco.
