The 49ers officially placed Samuel Womack III on injured reserve on Saturday and elevated cornerback Tre Swilling from the practice squad as his replacement for the Week 2 game with the Rams.
Swilling is set to make his NFL debut as the 49ers' fifth corner, with his family name likely to be familiar many, especially fans of one of San Francisco's former NFC West rivals.
That is because Swilling is the son of former Saints linebacker Pat Swilling, who, as a member of New Orleans' famed 'Dome Patrol', was named to the Pro Bowl five times and earned first-team All-Pro honours twice. He was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1991.
The younger Swilling is only at the start of his journey having initially signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent last year.
He'll have to go some way to even come close to matching the exploits of his father, but the 49ers will hope Swilling's NFL lineage will help him be ready for the moment if and when he is called upon.
The 49ers have used a standard practice squad elevation to promote Swilling, meaning they have a free spot on the active roster with Womack now on IR. Womack is expected back this season and could miss around six to eight weeks with a meniscus injury.
