49ers have the second-worst quarterback room in the NFC West

In a recent ranking of NFL quarterbacks, the 49ers came up disappointingly low.

When looking at the quarterback position, the San Francisco 49ers don't necessarily strike fear in anyone's heart.

Between Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold, the Niners' quarterback position is more uncertain than ever. But that doesn't mean it is worse than the other teams in the division.

In a recent ranking of NFL quarterbacks, the Niners came in second-to-last in the NFC West, only above Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks, sitting behind the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.

Most of the Niners' low ranking is due to injuries. There is simply too much uncertainty regarding Purdy's health and Lance's production. However, even if Purdy was healthy, it isn't a guarantee that he would pick up on his surprising run during his rookie season.

Purdy was the third-string quarterback on the Niners for a reason.

Then Lance didn't play nearly long enough to get a good assessment of the style of quarterback he could bring when projecting his development forward.

Arguably the most proven quarterback on the roster right now is Darnold, and that isn't a great place to be.

If Purdy is healthy, he is on the fast track to start again. Still, the Niners like what they have with Lance, and realistically the organization could attempt to rebuild his trade value before shipping him off to someplace else.

The Niners didn't come in ranked highly when looking at the quarterback room, and the low status is no surprise. If the Niners come up short in 2023, it will be because the quarterbacks couldn't produce or stay healthy for long enough stretches.
