The 49ers rounded off their joint practices with the Raiders on Friday, and it's fair to say the second session could have gone better for San Francisco.

There were turnovers aplenty for the Niners as their quarterbacks struggled to protect the football.

Jimmy Garoppolo again had success moving the Raiders' offense against his former team but, if there was any internal concern about the 49ers' performance in Nevada, the players and coaching staff were not showing it.

After giving a lot of reps to the starters, the 49ers will likely predominantly play the backups in Sunday's preseason opener against Las Vegas after a pair of practices that perhaps reaffirmed how much work it will take to get this Super Bowl caliber roster back to Conference Championship weekend after bowing out at that stage last season.

49ers-Raiders Joint Practices: Key Takeaways for San Francisco

49ers get some added D-Line depth

While the 49ers’ defensive line has impressed throughout training camp, it has also had to deal with a lack of depth due to Nick Bosa’s holdout and some injuries up front.

But the Niners got back an edge rusher who has been missing for much of camp on Friday as rookie fifth-round pick Robert Beal Jr. returned to the practice field.

On top of that, the 49ers signed former Chiefs second-round pick Breeland Speaks to further bolster their depth on the D-Line, placing cornerback Anthony Averett on injured reserve.

Speaks recently led the USFL in sacks, recording nine for the Michigan Panthers. Despite those impressive numbers, he will be a long shot to make the team, but his presence will hopefully help ensure the Niners have enough resources on the defensive line to get through a preseason in which the starters will play minimal snaps.

Ferrell unfazed by Raiders return

One of the stars of training camp has been defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who the 49ers signed to a one-year deal this offseason after his unsuccessful start to his career with the Raiders.

The Raiders selected Ferrell fourth overall in 2019, but if returning to the team for whom he struggled to vindicate his draft status negatively impacted the former Clemson star, it wasn’t obvious to defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

“No, no, not at all. Just another week at work,” Wilks said when asked if Ferrell had been fazed by returning to face the Raiders.

“I know it’s something special to him, so hopefully he goes out and performs well on Sunday. He’s been great. I think he’s one of the guys that I talk to [Defensive Line Coach Kris] Kocurek about it all the time. Just his attention to detail, his urgency that he practices with each and every day. He only has one motor. That’s one thing I love about him.”

Picks aplenty for Purdy

With Purdy set to watch Sunday’s exhibition from the sideline, the 49ers made sure to get their starting quarterback a significant number of reps in his final practice of the week.

In the 11 on 11 team period, Purdy was credited by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area as taking 39 reps, all of which were with the first team. Trey Lance had just five 11 on 11 reps and Sam Darnold four.

Maiocco had Purdy as going 15 of 26, yet the focus was not on the throws he completed to teammates, but those intercepted by opponents. David Lombardi of The Athletic reported Purdy as throwing two picks in the team period and had all three 49ers quarterbacks down as being intercepted six times over the course of 7 on 7 and the full team period.

Some reports had the Raiders picking off eight passes. While the Niners would obviously rather not have their quarterbacks tossing picks in any scenario, it is important to consider that they were thrown in a setting in which both coaching staff and quarterbacks alike are experimenting to see what works ahead of the regular season.

Left tackle Trent Williams certainly showed little concern when asked about the interceptions.

Asked if he gets worried about interceptions thrown in camp, Williams replied:

“I just don’t. I got faith in Coach. I got faith in Brock. I mean, it’s the preseason. The guy just got back from a six-month rehab. I’m definitely not putting too much into a practice rep or a practice interception. I literally don’t even think about it, not one second. I wouldn’t even have known (about the interceptions) if you didn’t tell me.”

Anxiety over interceptions thrown by Purdy will grow if he continues to make such errors with the benefit of Shanahan’s regular-season play-calling, but for now it’s best not to hit the panic button.

With Purdy out of the picture for the game between the Niners and Raiders, the attention from a San Francisco perspective will be mainly fixed on Lance and Darnold as a compelling battle to be QB2 goes under the preseason spotlight.
