The 49ers' most significant move of the offseason saw them sign a hugely impactful defensive lineman from the Eagles in inking Javon Hargrave to a massive deal.
Now they may have an opportunity to take another player from Philadelphia's defensive front.
Philadelphia, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, has granted edge rusher Derek Barnett permission to seek a trade.
Barnett, the 14th overall pick of the Eagles in 2017, missed almost the entirety of last season with a torn ACL suffered in the season opener.
Now healthy again, Barnett is on an Eagles defense stuffed with pass rushers, seemingly leaving him keen to find a team on which he can secure more playing time.
As well as Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat and veteran Brandon Graham, the Eagles also have first-round rookie Nolan Smith among their edge-rush options.
Barnett could find that playing time with San Francisco. While the 49ers' defense is one renowned for winning with its D-Line depth, the Niners do not have a lot of appealing options at edge rusher beyond Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, who is still holding out as he awaits a likely record-setting contract extension.
Clelin Ferrell has impressed in preseason and the 49ers have high hopes for Drake Jackson, but the lack of standouts at that position in Bosa's absence was a theme of training camp.
Still only 27, Barnett would give the 49ers with a history of decent production even if his numbers don't quite vindicate his draft status. Barnett has recorded at least five sacks in three seasons (2017, 2019 and 2020). Prior to 2022, Barnett had only one season (2018) in which he failed to register at least 30 pressures, per Pro Football Focus.
In short, Barnett is an edge rusher who can provide exactly the kind of rotational impact the 49ers need at the position.
The problem they could face is getting the Eagles to agree to do a deal. The 49ers faced the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game last season and are expected by many to be Philadelphia's primary rivals once again.
Sending Barnett to San Francisco would not be an enticing prospect for the Eagles. However, with 12 draft picks at their disposal following the Trey Lance trade and several options at a linebacker position where the Eagles are thin, the Niners have the resources to put an interesting proposal together.
The 49ers will primarily rely on a starting defensive line led by Bosa and Hargrave for their pass-rush production. However, they would greatly benefit from an infusion of added proven talent off the edge. Finding a way to get a deal done with the Eagles for Barnett could put the 49ers in a much stronger position up front and better equip them to topple Philadelphia in the NFC.
