The 49ers had some tremendous news to start training camp.
General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed in their press conference on Tuesday that Purdy will not be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list and has been cleared to return to the practice field.
Purdy underwent elbow surgery in March after suffering a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) on the first offensive series of the NFC Championship Game.
Despite the extremely positive update, Lynch added the 49ers will be "sticking to the plan" they set out for him, meaning Purdy will get plenty of opportunities for rest as he goes through training camp.
One of those rest days will come on the 49ers' first scheduled practice on Wednesday, with Purdy having taken part in a throwing session on Tuesday.
But Purdy being cleared sets the stage for him to be the 49ers' starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Steelers.
He essentially won the job with an incredible emergence last season, the final pick in last year's draft leading San Francisco to five straight wins to end the regular season after replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. He then helped the Niners to a pair of playoff wins prior to his injury in Philadelphia.
Over the course of his five regular-season starts, the 49ers led the NFL in Expected Points Added per play on offense.
Now the challenge will be for Purdy to ensure he is in the best position possible to pick up where he left off when the Niners travel to Pittsburgh, but a first significant hurdle has been passed by San Francisco's new QB1.
