A year ago, the idea of a 49ers training camp revolving around Brock Purdy would have seemed extremely far-fetched.

But fans, coaches and front office executives alike may have all breathed a sigh of relief as the final pick of last year's draft stepped onto the field for practice on Wednesday.

Having ascended from draft afterthought to the 49ers' starting quarterback with a stunning emergence late last season, Purdy's recovery from surgery on the torn elbow ligament he suffered in the NFC Championship Game has been the story of the offseason for San Francisco.

It was revealed on Tuesday that Purdy had received clearance to return to practice and, after a rest day on the opening day of training camp, the most unlikely of starting quarterbacks was back putting his arm to the test in front of fans at the facility outside Levi's Stadium.

There is still a long way to go for Purdy as he readies himself to start in the season opener against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, and 49ers have said they will stick to a pre-determined plan that will include several rest days throughout training camp.

San Francisco will obviously want to see signs of progress from Purdy further into camp, but for now the Niners can afford to smile after he passed an important milestone in his return from an injury that could have robbed him of a deserved opportunity to start in 2023.
