Brock Purdy made San Francisco 49ers history on Sunday, setting a new franchise record for passing yards in a single season in their win over the Washington Commanders.
Purdy threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns to break the record set by Jeff Garcia (4,278) in 2000, his tally for the year now standing at 4,280.
It is a remarkable achievement for Purdy, the final pick in last year's draft, for a franchise that has had two of the most celebrated quarterbacks in NFL history in Joe Montana and Steve Young.
But when asked about his record-breaking effort, Purdy, whose performance helped the 49ers clinch the one seed in the NFC, was typically humble as he deflected praise to his extremely talented supporting cast.
"It's an honor, to be able to come into an organization with a rich history that this place has and obviously to be able to break a record like that," said Purdy.
"The human side of it is like, cool. I was just a little kid dreaming of playing in the NFL, and to be able to do something like that it's pretty cool.
"But I have to say, it's a testament to the team that I have around me. The dudes that I get to throw the ball to, the guys on defense, special teams, our coaches, organization.
"Everything has been so good for me to come in and they've allowed me to have success and so it's a testament to everybody around me and I’m very thankful."
Purdy walked into an excellent situation with the players around him on offense and a head coach who stands as the NFL's pre-eminent play-caller in Kyle Shanahan, who has put together a masterclass in 2023.
But Purdy, who leads the NFL in touchdown percentage, passer rating, QBR and every yards per attempt metric, still deserves tremendous credit for a season he entered off the back of offseason elbow surgery and that has seen make huge strides from his stunning eight-game emergence last year.
The massive leaps he has taken as a processor and a deep-ball thrower have elevated the offense to heights it previously hadn't reached under Shanahan, but Purdy's unwillingness to accept the acclaim for his accomplishments in 2023 is part of the reason why his teammates have such affection for a player who has authored one of the most unlikely stories in modern NFL history.
The 49ers’ skill-position group is officially historically good
They achieved an NFL first.
