The fallout from the 49ers' decision to pick Sam Darnold as their backup quarterback over Trey Lance has, at least for now, overshadowed the fact San Francisco has still not signed Nick Bosa to a contract extension.

Bosa's holdout continues as the 49ers and his representatives try to thrash out a deal that will almost certainly make him the highest-paid edge rusher in football and could make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history.

While Kyle Shanahan has made it clear he expected negotiations to take as long as they have, Lynch, speaking to KNBR on Thursday (h/t 49ers Webzone), expressed something closer to irritation that a deal has yet to be done. He did, however, reiterate that Bosa will eventually get a contract befitting of his status as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Asked if he was concerned by the continued impasse, Lynch replied:

"I think concern is a relative word. I don't like the situation. Since our tenure here, we haven't had a holdout to anywhere towards this magnitude, so not something I'm comfortable with. We're working really hard to try to change that. We're in good communication with his reps. He's a special player. He's going to get a special contract, I can tell you that. But, yeah, we're getting closer, and eager to bring this thing to a close, but I think I'll leave it at that. We've talked from the beginning, Nick and myself and his representatives, about let's keep this thing in-house, and so we'll continue to do that."

Lynch's comments that the 49ers are "getting closer" to a resolution are encouraging. The question, which may well be holding up a deal getting done, surrounds how special the 49ers are prepared to make his contract.

Are they willing to pay him more than Aaron Donald's average annual salary of $31.6 million and make Bosa the highest-paid defender in history? Or are they instead pushing to simply pay him more than T.J. Watt's average of $28n million a year?

As the regular season draws ever closer, the likelihood of the two sides reaching an agreement that will provide the answer increases. We should soon learn just how much the 49ers value the special play Bosa consistently produces.
