Pete Carroll's departure will not be the only change to the Seattle Seahawks' coaching staff.
The Seahawks on Wednesday made the shock announcement that Carroll is to be moved to an advisory role after 14 seasons as their head coach.
That news was followed by a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports that the rest of Seattle's coaching staff has been given the green light to look for other jobs, with Carroll's replacement set to be given full autonomy to build his own staff.
The staff member most likely to be coveted by rival clubs is offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
Waldron took over in 2021, his first season proving to be Russell Wilson's last in Seattle as their partnership failed to produce the desired results, but his reputation has risen since then because of the work he has done with Wilson's successor as starting quarterback, Geno Smith.
The Seahawks finished ninth in points and 13th in yards in 2022 as Smith won Comeback Player of the Year, with Seattle 13th in offensive DVOA that year. The 2023 season saw the Seahawks finish 17th in points and 21st in yards, yet Seattle actually improved in terms of efficiency by DVOA, moving up to 12th.
Having worked as the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in his previous stop, Waldron is well-versed in the offensive scheme that is the pre-eminent attack in the modern NFL.
As such, Waldron should not have any difficulty finding a new job. There hasn't much hype around the Seattle offense this season as the Seahawks attack and Smith took a step back in production, but its architect should attract plenty of interest in the coming weeks following a franchise-changing decision.
