2023 NFL Draft QB Prospects Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Hendon Hooker
The crop of quarterbacks entering the 2023 NFL Draft has been much anticipated and a ton of factors have influenced the thought that up to five will crack the first round.
Bryce Young, the diminutive but playmaking quarterback from Alabama seems like a lock to go first overall to the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers traded up with the Bears on March 10th to secure the top pick in this year’s NFL Draft, and while there was some flirtation with C.J. Stroud going with the first overall pick, Young is the consensus pick and the betting markets back this up. At the time of this writing, Young has the shortest odds by far at -1200.
Stroud should be selected in the first handful of picks, but there are rumors that the Houston Texans, who have the second overall pick, aren’t exactly enamored with Stroud. Perhaps that could move them into taking Will Anderson or even Anthony Richardson? The Texans could start a domino effect if they decide to pass on Stroud for either Richardson or another team need.
Richardson wowed everybody with his NFL Combine numbers and had a meteoric rise into the top-10 picks and potentially a top-5 pick. Good thing for him, as there are a number of teams that are or could be in the market for new signal-callers, like the Colts (fourth overall pick), Seattle (fifth), Detroit (sixth), Las Vegas (seventh), Atlanta (eighth) and Tennessee (11th).
Even the Texans could come back with their 12th pick if they don’t select a quarterback with their second overall pick, but Houston would have to avoid a minefield of other teams for that to happen. A trade would likely need to happen for Houston to get both a non-QB and Richardson.
The two wild cards in this quarterback equation are Kentucky’s Will Levis and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker. Levis is much safer to be drafted in the first round, though he does have some detractors. Hooker is coming off of an injury but has seen his stock rise into first-round consideration.
How Many Quarterbacks Will Be Drafted in Round 1 of 2023 NFL Draft – Over 4.5 Prediction
The question of how many quarterbacks will be drafted in round 1 will come down to where these five quarterbacks (Young, Stroud, Richardson, Levis and Hooker) will be drafted. With so many quarterback-needy teams after the 12th pick, like Detroit (18th), Tampa Bay (19th), Seattle (20th), and potentially Baltimore if they cut ties with Lamar Jackson, both Levis and Hooker could easily find suitors late in the first round.
With so many teams needing quarterbacks, a finite number of veteran signal-callers that were available in free agency in March and quarterbacks being the name of the game when it comes to a team contending or pretending, it makes sense that these five options will be hotly contested. We could see as many as four of them go in the first 12-15 picks, with Levis and/or Hooker being the final quarterback domino to fall.
When our experts were posed with the question, “How many quarterbacks will be drafted in round 1?” the answer was five, with Will Levis going to the Buccaneers at 19th and Hooker going to the Vikings at 22nd.
