NFL Betting Trends & Stats for Week 1
What began as a novice activity for fun, sports betting has since become a profession for some. Again, that is why NFL betting trends have become so important. That’s also why the number of NFL betting stats is virtually endless. However, we’ve shared some of the top NFL betting trends for Week 1 here.
Avoid Rookie Quarterbacks
Before we dive into the first of the NFL betting stats we have for, it’s important to note that we said avoid rather than fade. Rookie QBs can be hard to trust, and the NFL betting trends show that. There are three rookie QBs getting the nod in Week 1, and things have not gone well for them in the recent past.
Rookie QBs are just 0-13-1 straight up in their first start since 2003. Of course, that doesn’t always mean they can’t cover the spread. So, for example, Houston Texans QB CJ Stroud is the biggest underdog of the entire Week 1 slate. However, another one of the NFL betting stats we have for you further explains why you should avoid him.
As for Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson, coincidentally enough, we have yet another one of the NFL betting trends that concerns him. The last of the three rookie QBs for this Sunday is Carolina Panther Bryce Young. He’ll be taking on NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons, who are 6-2 straight up in their last eight home games.
So, rather than fading rookie QBs altogether, we’d suggest simply avoiding backing them to pull off upsets and focus on other NFL betting stats, such as the ones we have for you below.
Baltimore Ravens Start Off Hot
As mentioned, the Texans are the biggest underdog of the entire Week 1 slate, which just recently ticked down from 10 points to 9.5 points. Given how incredibly well the Baltimore Ravens have begun seasons, that’s no surprise.
Firstly, the Ravens have always been a great home team, and they’ve won each of the last six season openers by at least two touchdowns. During that span, they’ve won games by 32, 44 and 49 points; they’ve also excelled against the Texans. The last time Baltimore faced Houston, they went on to win 33-16. In fact, their matchup prior to that was a 41-7 Ravens win.
Now, Houston will be featuring a rookie QB, so Baltimore's hot starts should be one of the NFL betting trends to keep an eye on.
Indianapolis Colts Struggle in Season Openers
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Indianapolis Colts. Their rookie QB – Anthony Richardson – is a freak athlete with huge upside, but they are far from a complete team right now.
Indy is just 1-13-1 against the spread in their last 15 season openers, and now they have to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags are the clear favorites to win the AFC South this season and have owned the Colts in terms of covering the spread. While they may be just 5-5 in their last 10 meetings, they’re 7-2-1 against the spread.
That includes a 26-11 Jacksonville win to end the 2021 season, ultimately eliminating Indy for the playoffs. To keep the connections going, that was Jags QB Trevor Lawrence’s rookie season. In that year, there were also three rookie QBs that started in Week 1 – they went 0-3 straight up and 0-3 against the spread.
