The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might have to move fast if they want to keep a key member of their staff from leaving town.
The Buffalo Bills are reportedly planning to interview Bucs' QB coach Thad Lewis for their offensive coordinator position, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Lewis is perhaps the most logical of all candidates the Bucs could consider for the job, even though he doesn't have any previous experience as a coordinator. Dave Canales didn't have any when he was hired as offensive coordinator last year, and that worked out for him and the Bucs pretty well.
Lewis joined the Buccaneers in 2020 as an assistant wide receivers coach, a position he held for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He spent the 2022 season as the team's quarterback coach.
He worked closely with Baker Mayfield last season, as the latter enjoyed a career turnaround in Tampa. With Mayfield set to hit the free agent market, the Buccaneers could perhaps make themselves a more attractive option for Mayfield by making his QB coach his offensive coordinator if he was to return. That turnaround surely is what earned Lewis the attention of the Bills and likely other teams around the league.
The same logic for Baker, Lewis, and the Bucs goes for Mike Evans as well, who is also set to become a free agent. Money of course will be a factor for him and Mayfield, but Evans' familiarity from working with Lewis can't be a bad thing as Evans considers his options this offseason.
There's no doubt the Buccaneers will kick the tires on several outside experienced options over the coming week. However, the best option for keeping the momentum going from a successful 2023 into 2024 might be going with the guy who's already inside the building. It sounds like they might have to move fast to make that happen.
