The Kansas City Chiefs aren't bringing Tyrann Mathieu back in 2022.
Kansas City signed safety Justin Reid this week, signaling the end of Mathieu's time with the Chiefs.
Now that Mathieu is officially looking for a new home, could the Tampa Bay Buccaneers be an option?
The Bucs need a new safety after letting Jordan Whitehead leave for the New York Jets (Tampa Bay reportedly didn't even attempt to keep Whitehead).
Mathieu, who will turn 30 later this spring, could be a fit to replace Whitehead. The former LSU star is a tough, versatile defender who brings passion and leadership to the field.
And he happens to be on vacation right now with Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles' step-daughter, who is also Mathieu's fiancé.
Two of Bowles' sons are with Mathieu on vacation, too (Mathieu was recently in Hawaii for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' wedding). That doesn't mean a deal is imminent, but it's certainly an interesting connection.
One obstacle in this potential signing I've seen mentioned is the beef between Mathieu and Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady from Super Bowl LV.
Brady and Mathieu had a bit of an altercation in the Super Bowl, but that was cleared up via an apology text from Brady. So that's not an issue.
Another connection between Mathieu and the Bucs, of course, is Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians, who was Mathieu's head coach with the Arizona Cardinals. Arians once called Mathieu his favorite draft pick of all time.
Mathieu has been connected to several teams over the last few days. The Bucs, however, make a lot of sense. But would Tampa Bay want to spend around $15 million a year on a safety?
It seems doubtful, but I don't think we can rule it out.
