Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Dave Toub recently delivered a promising update on everyone's favorite underdog wide receiver.

Nikko Remigio has been on a path to making the Chiefs' 53-man roster since joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State last season. That goal was temporarily derailed when he suffered a clavicle injury during training camp a year ago. Now, he's back on track with several supporters in his corner including backup QB Carson Wentz and OC Matt Nagy

While it's good to have people on the offensive side of the ball on your side, making the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent means you need to have special teams coordinator Dave Toub in your corner. Speaking to Starcade Media at Justin Reid's recent Charity Golf Tournament, Toub was asked about Remigio's roster chances. In his answer, he revealed that Remigio is trending toward being the team's top kick returner.

"He's probably our No. 1 kick returner right now," Toub revealed. "I'd put him in that category, so he's got a real good shot in my book to make this team. He's doing everything he can as a wide receiver. He has to get in the depth there, he probably has to be a fifth or sixth receiver to be able to be on the 53. He's at least going to be on the practice squad, I guarantee that."

There is also the chance that the team attempts to stash Remigio on the practice squad and he's claimed on waivers. That said, being the team's top kick return prospect with the new kickoff rules could earn him a 53-man roster spot. Unless, of course, a returning veteran were to seize that opportunity from him. . .

Who is in direct competition with Remigio for a roster spot?

Chiefs fans might be thinking that Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney are guys who could keep Remigio off the 53-man roster, but Dave Toub mentioned another receiver as the one he's in direct competition with.

"Him and Mecole (Hardman), you're exactly right, they're going to battle it out," Toub said. "It'll come down to the return game and we'll see how they do on the offensive side as well."

Hardman will certainly have the advantage over Remigio on offense, having spent the past 4.5 seasons in the system. The new kick return rules put them on even grounds on special teams, so it's anyone's game there. The fact that Toub considers Remigio the top kick returner right now gives him an advantage for the time being, but training camp and the preseason will likely determine a winner there.

It's also important to consider that Hardman didn't exactly have a lot of suitors during this free agency period. He might be the type of veteran that you could get away with stashing on the practice squad as a vested veteran, whereas a player like Remigio might get scooped up should he hit waivers. That fact alone might weigh into a decision between the two talented wideouts.
