Just days after the conclusion of mandatory minicamp, new Kansas City Chiefs WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown is back at work.

Brown, who signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs this offseason, has been a standout during Phase III of the offseason workout program. He's made highlight plays with star QB Patrick Mahomes during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. The sixth-year NFL veteran has quickly emerged as one of Mahomes' top targets opposite Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice in the passing game.

With the five-week break between mandatory minicamp and Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, players are left to their own devices. Many of them travel and wind up using that break to take some much-needed time off before the grueling season ahead, but that's not the case for Brown. He posted a workout video on Tuesday, which shows him getting after it.

Brown picking up the Chiefs' offense quickly according to Mahomes

Brown having a standout offseason to this point isn't just a coincidence. He's putting in the work behind the scenes to make sure that he's ready to go come Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.

“He’s done a great job," Mahomes said of Brown following mandatory minicamp. "It’s hard to learn this offense and I feel like he’s done a great job picking it up very fast. Obviously, you see the ability. . . I can just see that it’s going to be a great season for him."

Beyond his own success, Mahomes thinks just having a guy like Brown in the offense will create opportunities for other players to have more success as well. The more weapons the team has at their disposal, the more you have to account for as a defense facing the Chiefs' offense.

"Just take pressure off of other guys," Mahomes said. "And I think it’s going to help get Trav (Kelce) open, help get Rashee (Rice) open, going to help get all these guys open. You’re going to have that speed threat that can run routes and do all those different things. So, I’m very excited to get him out there in the regular season.”

Andy Reid on the growing trust between Mahomes and Brown

What has become apparent during OTAs and mandatory minicamp is that Mahomes and Brown already have developed a great deal of trust after a short amount of time. Chiefs HC Andy Reid says it's all about how they communicate both on the field during a given play, but also in the huddle before the play, and off the field as well.

“As a coach you look for the communication part," Reid told reporters. "Are they willing to share what they’re thinking with one another? They’ve got a good connection with that part of it – they’re talking. Once Patrick (Mahomes) knows what Hollywood’s (Brown) thinking and Hollywood kind of knows where Patrick physically can get the ball to, location on the field, not as much depth as location on the field, then that’s a good thing.”

That connection is something they've been working on since Brown first showed up to catch passes from Mahomes in Texas this offseason. It also extends beyond Mahomes to the receiver corps and the rest of his teammates on offense. They're trying to build something special and Brown already feels he's become close with several of his new teammates.

“I mean obviously Rashee (Rice) but Pat (Mahomes), Trav (Kelce), everyone really," Brown said. "We train together too like outside of here, so the whole receiver corps (is) getting together and just being around each other as much as we can heading into the season.”
