The Kansas City Chiefs could now be down a star player on the offensive side of the ball against the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.
During the team's final practice of the week on Tuesday, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce suffered a hyperextended knee during practice. Andy Reid updated reporters right away on the injury to kick off his media availability.
"As far as the injuries go, (Travis) Kelce hyperextended his knee today," Reid said. "So, we'll just see how that goes as we go forward."
Reid did not provide a specific update on Kelce's status for Week 1, but obviously, there is a level of concern with a hyperextension injury. There can be accompanying ligament damage, but we'll only know the extent of the injury with further evaluation.
"No," Reid said when asked for a game status update. "They're looking at it now, so we'll just see how it goes."
According to Chiefs TE Blake Bell, via The Athletic's Nate Taylor, Kelce's injury happened during a red zone period of practice. Reid said that he was standing right in front of the play as it happened. WR Skyy Moore told Taylor that he saw Kelce limp off the field under his own power.
The Chiefs are expected to be missing Chris Jones in Week 1, so they're going to be down a lot of star power if Kelce is unable to play. The team has been preaching the "next man up" mentality in Jones' absence and they'll do the same should Kelce miss any time. Third-year TE Noah Gray would be filling in for Kelce alongside the veteran Bell.
