In the age of modern football, where many teams zig, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to zag.

One of the areas where they continue to buck the trend is at the inside linebacker position. KC has created one of the league's deepest and strongest units, despite other teams trend of discounting the position.

And as first reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, their efforts to keep the position as a strength have been noted:

Drue Tranquill Re-Signs with Chiefs

Willie Gay, Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal may have been the incumbents on the roster in 2023, but Tranquill honed a key role last season, playing in 16 games, starting in eight of them and recording 78 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

The contract is a major step up for Tranquill, who signed a one year, three-million-dollar deal after leaving the Chargers last offseason. Slated to more than double his earnings, with an APY over $6.3m, Tranquill will now make starter level money, ranking above fellow linebackers Cole Holcomb, Shaq Thompson, and Quincy Williams in average salary per year.
