The Kansas City Chiefs have a position battle that will take place in training camp at the offensive guard position.
The Chiefs don't have many starting jobs for the taking heading into their 2023 training camp, but they have some backup positions available. That's what training camp is about, though; making an effort, the biggest effort, to have a role on the 53-man roster, even if it is as a backup.
The Chiefs' offensive line situation has been weird, to say the least, this offseason. Everywhere but the interior offensive line has had a splash of drama, but even on the inside, some guys will be trying to take other jobs in training camp.
We know who the two starters are at the guard positions, as they will be until something crazy happens. Joe Thuney is one of the best offensive guards in the league, and Trey Smith is quickly inserting his name into that conversation. But, we aren't 100% sure who the backups will be in terms of second string and third string, which is why there will be a battle to be had in training camp.
Here are the guys competing for those backup spots that we could see in a position battle in training camp:
Chiefs position battles for offensive guard
Nick Allegretti, LG

Allegretti has an advantage over the other guys because he has been with the team in this system since 2019. Allegretti has played 57 games for the Chiefs and even started 12. When he has started games, he has been pretty serviceable.
Now, Allegretti has to battle for the backup spot with someone who could take his job as the second-string guy. In 673 total pass-blocking snaps in his career, Allegretti has only allowed one sack and 31 total pressures. That's not bad at all; however, if he wants to keep his job, he will have to bring it to training camp this summer.
The good news for Allegretti that will end up helping him out is that he is versatile and can play either guard position, as he has in the past with Kansas City.
Mike Caliendo, LG

Caliendo is going into his age 26 season and has still yet to ever play a snap in the NFL, per Pro Football Reference. That is important to mention, though, because it means that this guy will be hungry. He has more to play for than the guys he is competing with for that backup spot.
Caliendo should show up to training camp ready to take someone's job because if not, he could end up on the practice squad or even end up getting cut. There is no tape on him, so this is the perfect opportunity for him to make something out of nothing.
Darian Kinnard, RG

Kinnard is one of the few rookies from last year's class that didn't do much. The Chiefs had one of their most involved classes ever, and Kinnard was busy trying to make the game-day roster every week. The talent and physical tools are there, but for some reason, he didn't have a great training camp last year.
Because of that, I think we could see a different approach to camp for him. He will be hungry, and he wants to prove that the Chiefs made the right decision to draft him. Kinnard will be battling an undrafted free agent in Jerome Carvin for a roster spot, and both have something to lose.
The Chiefs will start their training camp on July 23 in St. Joseph, Missouri, as they have since 2013. This year, there will be plenty to watch for too.
