The Kansas City Chiefs have started the 2023 season in a way we didn't really think would happen. They have an elite defense and a shaky offense. Usually, with Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes teams, it's more like the other way around.
The offense has always been elite. They led the league in points last season with a new group of receivers, and Mahomes had his best year yet. But the defense is doing something pretty spectacular to start the season. They are looking like a top 10 defense and maybe even top five.
The offense, well, it's looking like one of the bottom-half units in the league. For the most part, we can assume the offense will get fixed because the Chiefs do have Reid coaching and Mahomes at quarterback. So, let's focus on the defense.
After Week 2 now, the Chiefs' defense has allowed just two touchdowns. They held the Lions' offense to 14 points and the Jaguars to nine. This defense is hungry.
"Like I said, we're hungry. I know, off of last year, just based on stats and everything that went on, yeah, we won the Super Bowl, but I know this defense definitely felt like we could've done more and produced more," second-year cornerback Trent McDuffie said on Wednesday.
"Coming into this year, this is something that we definitely have been looking at and want to continue to succeed with and show that just because last week and the week before we held them to nine and 14 points, this is a defense that's going to continue to do that and be consistent with it."
That right there should scare the rest of the league. Everyone knows the Chiefs offense will get things figured out and become a top-five offense once again; if you add a defense already there, they will be an unstoppable team.
It should truly terrify teams around the league that this team currently has the second-best DVOA. The Chiefs defense has generated defensive expected points added of 8.21, second in the league, according to TruMedia. And it will likely only get better.
