One of the most iconic moments of Patrick Mahomes' career came in December of 2019 against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. After running up the score against Denver, Mahomes sat on the bench on the sideline mid-game and made an interesting declaration.
"I think I’m a snow game guy," he said during the game. "I don't know why, but I kind of like it. Everything is like super slot and I'm just standing out here straight in the pocket just like, 'Bloop.'"
The Chiefs would go on to win that game, with Mahomes putting up over 300 yards passing and two touchdowns in the 23-3 beatdown. Now, Mahomes is set to face the Broncos again with snow in the forecast.
Mahomes the "Snow Game Guy"
The veteran quarterback still doesn't quite understand why he likes and excels in these games with winter weather. It certainly doesn't have to do with his background.
"I grew up in Texas, so I only saw snow like twice growing up," Mahomes said on Wednesday. "I’ve just become accustomed to it here in Kansas City.”
Snow hasn't impacted Mahomes the way that many think it might. Instead of acting as an impediment to his grip and throwing ability, it has actually been a boon to it so far.
“I thought snow was going to be like rain where it gets a little slippery – whereas snow – it makes it a little sticky in the air," Mahomes said. "I think that could be something as far as why. At the end of the day, you just have to go out there and throw it and see what happens.”
With anywhere from 1-4 inches of snow expected in the Denver metro area, Mahomes will be prepared for the potential of a snow game and the first cold weather matchup of the 2023 NFL season.
Cold weather is also "Big Guy Weather"
Mahomes isn't the only one in Kansas City who gets a natural advantage in the winter weather. The big guys in the trenches find it easier to play in the cold according to Chiefs RG Trey Smith.
"You know, cold weather is big guy weather," Smith said. "I prefer it. You can play and sustain a lot longer, especially on the longer drives. You feel better when you get the juices flowing and pumping. But to me, I've always preferred cold weather over hot-warm weather. At the end of the day, however cold or however hot it is, put the ball down, and let's play."
The offensive and defensive lines for Kansas City are already playing at a high level. Any advantage they can get will be the cherry on top of what are already considered potent position groups.
