The matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past weekend had a little extra spice thanks to some comments from Bucs QB Tom Brady on his podcast.
Brady called the Bengals' defense "fairly tough", which some Cincy players took as an insult.
And after beating Tampa Bay, several Bengals players had some fun with the "fairly tough" comments.
Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow, unlike many of his teammates, didn't seem bothered by Brady's comment.
In fact, Burrow said he didn't even know about the comments. And when informed about what Brady said, Burrow said he didn't think Brady meant the "fairly tough" comment as a slight against the Bengals.
“No. What are you talking about? I don’t know what you’re talking about," said Burrow when asked about Brady's comment.
“Oh, I’m sure he didn’t mean any disrespect by that," added Burrow when informed about the comments. "Our defense is very tough and I'm sure that’s all he was trying to get across.”
I feel like there's a 95 percent chance that Burrow heard all about those comments this week. I mean, everyone on social media that follows the Bengals knew about the comments. And everyone else in Cincinnati's locker room heard it. How would Burrow not know about it?
This is likely just Burrow being diplomatic as a quarterback, which is a great trait for a leader to have. Burrow is a confident dude, but he's also extremely competitive. I'm betting he heard those comments and it served as some motivation for him.
Because let's be honest, Burrow is just like Brady and Michael Jordan — he's always looking to prove he's the best. And guys like that use any perceived slight as motivation — even if it's a bit of a stretch. That's why guys like Brady and Jordan are the best of the best. And it's why Burrow is on that same trajectory.
