Billings has filled a major role for the Bears defensive line throughout the 2023 season. Billings was recognized for his importance to the team when he was named the Bears honorary captain in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Billings has totaled 14 combined tackles and 4.5 stuffs while starting in all 8 games in 2023. Billings joined the Bears in 2023 after spending the 2022 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. The 28-year-old was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 4th round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
While the stats aren't exciting, Billings major role to the team comes from his high level of effort and leadership on the field. The 6'1, 311 pound defensive tackle has been a disrupter on the interior of the Bears defense both against the run and the pass.
"We’re extremely excited to be able to keep Andrew in Chicago," Bears general manger Ryan Poles said via the team's official announcement . "The professionalism, dependability and toughness he brings to our defense exhibit the type of player we want in our organization.”
This is the first of many defensive contract extension the Bears will make in the days ahead. Poles will also be in active contract extension negotiations with newly acquired defensive end Montez Sweat and cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
