Bears have reported interest in signing top free agent
The Chicago Bears are reported to be interested in signing one of the top defensive talents in the 2023 free agency class.
The Chicago Bears reportedly have interest in one of the top defenders of the 2023 free agency class.
The Score’s Jordan Schultz is reporting that the Bears are expected to show interest in inking free agent linebacker Bobby Okereke when the NFL’s free agency period officially begins.
The move would make plenty of sense considering Okereke played in Matt Eberflus’ defensive system during their time together with the Indianapolis Colts. The Bears’ head coach served as the Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2018-2021.
Okereke served as the SAM/WILL linebacker in Indy where he racked up 152 tackles in 2022. He also compiled six tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He has been a staple in the middle of the Colts’ defense, starting in 49 games since he was drafted in 2019.
Unfortunately for Indianapolis, paying Okereke top 10 money at the linebacker position doesn’t add up, especially considering the team has invested heavily in Shaquille Leonard. Doing so would tie up a large chunk of the team’s salary cap space in one position group.
The Bears aren’t complaining, though. Okereke would be a perfect fit for Chicago’s defense. His market value is projected to be in the $12-14 million range according to Schultz, which is certainly within the Bears’ budget.
The Bears must get stronger up the middle in the 2023 offseason. Signing Okereke and drafting Will Anderson or Jalen Carter could vault the defense into the top half of the league next season.
