The free agency period has begun with the legal tampering period officially open and the Chicago Bears have already been linked to a major free agent.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Bears are expected to make a major push for former Philadelphia Eagles' running back D'Andre Swift in free agency and are expected to agree to terms on a three-year, $24 million deal. The deal is expected to include $15.3 million guaranteed.

It's been rumored since the 2024 NFL Combine ended that the Bears will be making a push for another running back in free agency and now they plan to strike on a top name.

Swift joined the Eagles in 2023 after spending the first three seasons of his career with the Detroit Lions, who drafted him with the 35th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Georgia. In his first year in Philadelphia, Swift set career-highs in rushing yards (1,049) and rushing yards per game (65.6).

While Swift's production on the ground saw an increase in 2023, his production as a receiver plummeted compared to his time in Detroit. Swift had career-lows in receptions (39), receiving yards (214), and receiving touchdowns (1) in 2023.

The Bears' interest in pursuing a top free agent running back is a surprise to see considering the team already has Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson under contract at the position for the 2024 season. However, Herbert's current deal expires after next season and now the Bears are getting ahead of the curve.

The Bears' offense ranked Top-2 in rushing yards per game during each of the last two seasons under previous offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. With new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron joining the team from the Seattle Seahawks, it appears the Bears still want to make a major emphasis on the run game.

The addition of Swift will give the Bears a dynamic back to utilize on offense which will be a major help for a potential rookie quarterback coming to town next season.
