The Chicago Bears can get a headstart on free agency by adding a veteran wide receiver that has a connection to the current coaching staff.
Most NFL players won't be able to sign with a new team until the new league year begins in March.
Players that are released ahead of March, however, can sign with a new team at any time.
On Wednesday, the New York Giants voided wide receiver Sterling Shepard's contract, making him a free agent.
Shepard, a former second-round pick out of Oklahoma, tore his ACL in week three of the 2022 regular season. But he should be ready to go for the 2023 season.
The former Sooners standout previously played under Bears wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert when both were with the Giants, so there's a connection there.
Shepard isn't a star player and he's not going to suddenly be a Pro-Bowler. But he's a veteran with plenty of experience and he could certainly help quarterback Justin Fields in his development.
Signing Shepard wouldn't solve the Bears' wide receiver issues, but it would give them some solid depth. This seems like a cheap, no-brainer that Chicago should make happen.
