There are plenty of mixed opinions across the fanbase after the Chicago Bears traded a second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for wide receiver Chase Claypool.

Many fans are still divided on the move made by general manager Ryan Poles, but it’s clear how Claypool is being received within the Bears’ locker room.

Bears tight end Cole Kmet played alongside Claypool at Notre Dame. In fact, the pair of college teammates were both drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Kmet went to Chicago with 43rd overall pick while Claypool was drafted by Pittsburgh at No. 49 overall.

If anybody knows what Claypool is capable of, it’s Kmet.

“He’s a great dude, a great teammate, and ultra-competitive,” Kmet said when describing Claypool on Marquee Sports Network. “You’re getting an ultra-competitive receiver, and a guy who’s big, fast, strong, a willing blocker as well, which is an underrated thing about him. He’s going to be a great addition for us on the offensive side.”

The adjectives Kmet used to describe Claypool are all traits the Bears have been missing at the wide receiver position. His six-foot-four frame will allow him to make plays down the field for quarterback Justin Fields.

When asked about Claypool, Fields expressed his excitement.

“I’m excited,” Fields said on Wednesday. “He’s a playmaker, big body, athletic, fast, great 50/50 ball catcher.”

While many continue debating whether or not he was worth a second rounder, there is no question that Claypool enhances this Bears roster. Credit Poles for investing in Fields’ development by adding a unique talent to an otherwise mediocre passing attack.
