Most NFL/draft analysts have assumed all offseason that the Chicago Bears will trade the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The idea is that because of the presence of Justin Fields, the Bears don't need a quarterback. So they can trade the No. 1 overall selection for a passel of draft picks.
In recent weeks, however, there have been rumblings that Chicago could trade Fields and take a quarterback (either Bryce Young or CJ Stroud) with the No. 1 pick.
While that's still possible (though unlikely), it sounds like the Bears are almost certain to trade the No. 1 pick based on the latest report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Schefter reported on Monday morning that "multiple teams" have reached out to Chicago about trading for the No. 1 pick.
According to Schefter, the Bears are "leaning toward" trading the No. 1 pick.
ESPN NFL insider Field Yates pointed out that there are five teams in the top 10 that could be looking to trade up for the No. 1 pick:
- Houston Texans (No. 2 pick)
- Indianapolis Colts (No. 4 pick)
- Las Vegas Raiders (No. 7 pick)
- Atlanta Falcons (No. 8 pick)
- Carolina Panthers (No. 9 pick)
This is setting up perfectly for the Bears.
There's plenty of competition in the top 10 for the No. 1 pick, which should lead to a better return for Chicago.
The best-case scenario for the Bears would be trading with the Colts and landing the No. 4 pick. That would allow Chicago to add some draft picks and still select either edge rusher Will Anderson or defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the No. 4 pick. It's a dream situation for the Bears.
By the way, if you're a Chicago fan and you saw the "leaning toward" trading the pick note from Schefter, I wouldn't take that as a sign that the Bears might keep the pick.
That's likely just the Bears floating that narrative out there so they can have even more leverage when it comes to trading the pick. A savvy move by the Chicago front office.
