The Bears hit rock-bottom on Sunday with an embarrassing 31-10 loss to the New York Jets, moving the team’s record to 3-9 on the season.

It’s the fifth straight loss for a Bears team that has struggled to find its footing on defense this season. It also marks the third consecutive season in which Chicago has endured a five-game losing streak.

The Bears were depleted with injuries coming into the game, including starting quarterback Justin Fields, safety Jaquan Brisker, and cornerback Kyler Gordon. Eddie Jackson, Chase Claypool, Darnell Mooney, Riley Reiff, and Larry Borom suffered injuries during the game.

Chicago is deficient in the talent department with a fully healthy roster. Overcoming injuries is not something this particular team is constructed to do.

In order to break the cycle of mediocrity, the Bears must make multiple splashes in free agency this offseason. With over $116 million in salary cap space, it is imperative that Ryan Pace assembles a defense capable of wreaking havoc on opposing offenses while also finding a supporting cast for Fields.

It doesn’t hurt that three-win teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns picked up a fourth win on Sunday. If the season were to end today, the Bears would hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
