The fans of the Cincinnati Bengals and around the NFL world were in shock when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the turf of Paycor Stadium back in January after tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.
Hamlin was attended to immediately by first responders who performed CPR, automated external defibrillation (AED), and other procedures on Hamlin before taking him University of Cincinnati Medical Center. It was reported that Hamlin suffered from cardiac arrest and his heart was restored on the field.
This near-death experience inspired Hamlin to start the Chasing M's Foundation which promotes the safety of the youth through sports, training, and other activities. Hamlin is currently on a CPR tour that's sponsored by his foundation for AED education, but he said he recently will stick around in the city forever.
"When we started to plan this CPR tour, we had three cities in mind that we guaranteed we wanted to start with and that was Pittsburgh my home, Buffalo my second home, and Cincinnati my third home. So this was gonna happen," said Hamlin.
That moment and that image of Hamlin lying on the field, motionless, will never be forgotten by all of those who experienced it. Now, to see such a positive end to what looked like a situation that was headed for a tragic conclusion is what's the most important thing.
Hamlin has received awards and tons of recognition since all of this happened. However, it's the gift of life that Hamlin is embracing full throttle, and his gratitude for everything that he's been through is a big part of why he is so blessed.
Some things are bigger than football. What happened to Hamlin helped bring a nation together, and it bonded him with the people of Cincinnati forever.
