A slew of defensive contributors were unable to practice for the Cleveland Browns on their first day of preparation for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Safety Juan Thornhill remained out with the calf injury he suffered at the end of the preseason and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst popped up with a hamstring issue.

It is early in the week, so the worry is minimal. But with Thornhill missing almost two weeks with the calf injury, you have to wonder how bad it was.

Thornhill hasn’t practiced since Sept. 6 due to the calf injury. Rodney McLeod started in his place and played well. Combine that with Grant Delpit having possibly his best game as a pro, and Cleveland was fine at safety.

At this time, Thornhill is ‘day-to-day’ according to Stefanski. While he was not out there today, he very well could practice later in the week and make his Browns’ debut on Monday Night Football.

Maurice Hurst did not practice on Thursday in preparation for the Steelers due to a hamstring injury. The off-season signee played 17 defensive snaps or 30 percent against the Bengals in the opener. Hurst was able to record his first tackle since 2021 in the game.

Multiple veterans had the day off for rest on Thursday.

In Week 1, rookie Siaki Ika was inactive due to the fact that his style of play didn’t match up with Cincinnati. Ika appeared on the injury report with a foot injury on Thursday. Pittsburgh is going to look to run the ball more, especially with top wide receiver Diontae Johnson out. It would not surprise me if Ika made his debut in Week 2 if he is able to go. If Hurst is unable to go, it’s almost a sure thing. With his injury past, there is a worry with Hurst anytime he pops up on the injury report.

Defensive tackle Shelby Harris showed up on the injury report too, so there is plenty of worry at defensive tackle.
