The Alabama Crimson Tide finally put together a complete game against a competent opponent on Saturday afternoon.
Dominating the Missouri Tigers 34-0, there’s still a lot of work to do for Kalen DeBoer and the Tide to get back in the College Football Playoff conversation.
The head ball coach hinted at exactly what that is, after the game:
The Next Step for Alabama
“We got to have some better awareness with some things just living in the gray area and stuff, and it's hurting us just from really taking a big, big step, and I feel like we're just right on the edge,” DeBoer said after the game. “So we'll get a chance to hash through those, those areas, those gray areas that led to penalties or just missed execution. It just can't be that every little thing that is new or happens to us is something we have to learn. You know, a hard lesson might be just execution with play. I'm not talking about penalties all the time, so just, you know, go back to work.”
It might come off as the same old song and dance from DeBoer but the truth feels a little better after a 34-0 win then does after a defeat against your arch rival, the Tennessee Vols.
And the truth is, even if DeBoer and the Tide win out, it’s going to be a hard sell for the committee when analyzing their two losses. However, Georgia’s win over Texas along with Vandy’s coming to life could make a huge difference in the end.
“That's frustrating when you have to walk away with field goals,” added DeBoer. “But you know, Graham did a nice job getting a couple couple there in the first half, and that was, that was good, just to get some points. Then the defense just continued to, you know, keep fighting, get the takeaways. Got put in a couple spots, just because we couldn't get the field flipped and they got off the field.”
So for Alabama, it’s clear that near-perfect execution is going to be required down the stretch, starting with when the Tide take on the LSU Tigers in a couple of weeks.
