The Alabama Crimson Tide found themselves inside the top 12 in the inaugural college football 12 team playoff rankings.
Sitting at 11th overall with a massive game against the LSU Tigers on the line, The Tide have bigger things to worry about than where they sit in the first rankings of the year.
Just take HC Kalen DeBoer's word for it:
Kalen DeBoer has blinders on LSU
"I mean, right now we know we just have to keep winning, and that's what it's about. I didn't realize even where we were ranked until just now, so I knew we'd probably be up there somewhere," said DeBoer when asked about being ranked 11th in Tuesday's rankings. "But you know, each week is what it's about for us, and if we do what we need to do, then it will work itself out. And so that's the approach we have this week. That's the approach we had, after Tennessee as well. Just focus on what we call next play mindset, next game mindset. And that's the only thing that matters."
It sounds simple enough, but it's true for the Alabama Crimson Tide: "Just win baby." Anything can happen when you're dealing with a committee, but it's hard to envsion a world where the Tide are left out of the 12-team playoff if they finish the year with wins over LSU, Mercer, Oklahoma and Auburn.
So the response was appropriate from Kalen DeBoer. Rankings mean nothing until the final whistle is blown at the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa on November 30th. If the team manages to go unscathed through the home stretch, that's when the rankings matter.
But in a game that is self admittedly must win, DeBoer knows that any looking ahead is actually shortsighted.
We'll see if the same intensity and focus that he spoke with on Wednesday carries over to the field on Saturday.
