Kalen DeBoer knows Alabama didn't reach its standard in 2024
"Yeah, I mean, if you internally ask us, no," said DeBoer when asked if the team met the Alabama standard last year. "We fell short of making the Playoffs. It’s as simple as that, right? Giving yourself a chance to go compete for a championship.I think there’s a lot of things that I’m super proud of that have happened within the program that are part of the progression . . .
". . . I’m proud of them and the way they’ve responded to us not realizing the goals that we set out to have, getting back to work, focusing on the main thing. I feel that’s always been the case. Sometimes there’s ups and downs that you have to go through unfortunately that we had to experience. But in the end, we’re going to take advantage of the failures we’ve had and be better because of it."
It's refreshing to hear that kind of accountability from DeBoer, whose own decision-making and reactions came under heavy scrutiny for a lack of discipline and viewing the 2024 season as unsuccessful.
DeBoer has been one of the best coaches in football at every stop. And if Alabama didn't have some of the loftiest standards in the entire country, perhaps the criticism of year one wouldn't have been as bad.
But when you miss an expanded playoff field, and you lose to Vanderbilt, the wins over Georgia and LSU go by the wayside. It sucks to say, but those that bleed Crimson, they don't care about those wins when you have losses to Tennessee, Vandy and Oklahoma.
So at the very least, righting those wrongs from 2024, and getting the team to compete as one of the top 12 teams in the country is paramount for Alabama in 2025.
