Ty Simpson ended his season with many worried about his NFL Draft stock. After leading the Alabama Crimson Tide to their first College Football Playoff win of the Kalen DeBoer era, Simpson’s last snaps in a Crimson Tide uniform came as he hobbled off the field injured amid a beatdown against the Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl.

But that doesn’t tell the whole story with Simpson. As many in the draft space have started to comb through his midseason tape, they are seeing why there was a time when Simpson was the Heisman favorite and pushing to be the No. 1 overall pick. Add on a stellar showing at the NFL Combine and suddenly, there is talk that Simpson could go as high as 6th overall. There’s just one problem when you see who holds the sixth overall pick.

Todd McShay says Ty Simpson should be in play for the sixth overall pick

“I’m a big Ty Simpson fan, despite the 6-1, the injuries and the 15 starts,” McShay said. “But I’m already starting to hear people like, could he go as high as Cleveland, sitting there at six, and I hope for Ty Simpson, he does not become a Cleveland Brown.”

“I think he’s different, and I think that there are some teams out there that are just trying to be really quiet about it because everyone’s talking about (Fernando) Mendoza, and then the rest of the quarterbacks suck. It’s just not the deal. And Ty Simpson is going to go somewhere in the first, and it won’t shock me if it’s in the top 15.”

Best landing spot for Ty Simpson

I second McShay’s opinion. I want to see Simpson go as high as he can, but not to the New York Jets or Cleveland Browns. Simpson needs to go to an environment where he can grow. He’s only started 15 collegiate games. If the Jets, or the Browns, as McShay is suggesting, are the team, he’s going to be thrown into the fire and in a poor environment.

The Jets have proven to be a wasteland for quarterbacks, and the Browns are no different. The best spot for Simpson in my opinion, is the Los Angeles Rams. They have two first-round picks and Sean McVay is a QB guru. Simpson could be the heir apparent to Matthew Stafford, sitting behind him and growing into a franchise quarterback. So while the rise of Simpson could be good for his bank account in the interim, the long term is what matters more.
