There was a time when Ty Simpson was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and was being selected as high as first overall in some 2026 NFL Mock Drafts. But over the last four to six weeks, that player seemingly disappeared, and it all came to a head following his performance against the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship.

That raised questions regarding his future not only as a prospect but as the quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Following a 17-0 deficit to start the game against Oklahoma, it looked like those hypotheticals would soon become a reality. Until he bounced back, or in his words, “wrote back.”

Ty Simpson calls out Alabama’s doubters following 34-24 win against Oklahoma

“They wrote us off, but we didn’t write back,” said Simpson during his on-field interview following the win in Norman. The noise had reached a fever pitch over the last month, but it was deafening after the first quarter against Oklahoma.

All sorts of theories about head coach Kalen DeBoer having mailed it in to join Michigan and talk regarding the fall of the Crimson Tide were unavoidable. But then came the drive that saw Simpson hook up with freshman WR Lotzeir Brooks to end the drought, and suddenly the tables turned.

“I guess we can thank you guys [media] for that. I mean, ya’ll kind of wrote us off in a sort of way. So, appreciate that,” added Simpson in his postgame presser via Alabama’s YouTube Channel when asked about the team bouncing back after the SEC Championship.

Even after that beatdown against Georgia, Simpson’s confidence never wavered. He stood up in front of the media after the game and said with a straight face that Alabama still has the best offense in the country.

When Alabama was down 17, Simpson was engaged on the sidelines, picking up his teammates and showing an unbreakable confidence. Confidence that would help Alabama score 27 unanswered and see him complete 62 percent of his passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns.

“Ty, seemed pretty confident,” said DeBoer when asked about how his team responded to the 17-0 hole. “I think it just goes back to that. I know what I was echoing and trying to get guys to believe in, is just get one score. Make it a one-score game. Just chip away.”

Safe to say that the Tide and Simpson will continue chipping.
