The Auburn Tigers are no strangers to good news on the recruiting front, at least not anymore. Hugh Freeze and his staff have quickly repaired the damage done by the embarrassing Bryan Harsin era and finally find themselves back among the elite recruiting college football programs.
Freeze just brought in the sixth overall ranked college football recruiting class for 2025 and he's already at it again for 2026 with a handful of elite players committed. This week Auburn fans got some more good news on the recruiting front, as it looks like they're firmly in the mix to land a potentially elite running back talent this summer.
Ezavier Crowell, Four Star Running Back
Ezavier Crowell has been a top target for Auburn recruiting for some time as he is an immensely talented in-state running back who plays his high school football just three hours away.
This week he announced that he is down to his final six schools, and Auburn made the cut.
Crowell is fresh off of back to back 2000-yards-from-scrimmage seasons with 60+ total touchdowns in his last two season at running back.
He was trending towards becoming a surefire lock for five star status as a part of the 2027 recruiting class, but then reclassified to 2026. Crowell's reclassification sent all the top programs pursuing him into a hurried scramble to land him as his special talent will be arriving on campus a year earlier than originally expected.
Luckily, Auburn was one of just four programs to land an official visit with Crowell scheduled for this June. Crowell plans to visit Texas, Florida State, and Alabama this summer as well, so despite his top six also including Georgia and Ohio State it seems his true top options are down to four programs.
Crowell has already visited with Auburn and Alabama both multiple times since his sophomore season began, leading many to believe he's leaning towards staying in-state. If the battle comes down to the two Alabama schools then Auburn could be in a great spot to steal him away from their SEC rival.
Alabama has long been a school that sends plenty of running back talent to the NFL, but amid Nick Saban's exit and Kalen DeBoer's struggles in year one the script is beginning to flip. Alabama just lost their best running back talent in Justice Haynes to the Michigan Wolverines via the Transfer Portal following a season where the Crimson Tide ranked 50th among FBS programs in rushing yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Auburn just force fed star running back Jarquez Hunter over 200 combined carries and receptions for 6.5 yards per touch, likely sending him off to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Tigers will likely operate with a running back by committee this season via some mix of Damari Alston, Jeremiah Cobb, transfer Durell Robinson, and freshman Alvin Henderson, but in 2026 they could be looking for a new feature back to lean on.
Hopefully Huge Freeze and company can continue working towards closing the deal on Ezavier Crowell, ultimately keeping him away from SEC rivals like Alabama, Texas, and Georgia. If the Tigers want to get back to competing for SEC Championships these are the recruiting battles that must be won.
