The Auburn Tigers got off to an extremely slow start with their 2026 recruiting cycle, but Hugh Freeze and his staff have begun bouncing back over the past month. Since the start of July they’ve added a half dozen high pedigree talents and now they’re looking to spark major recruiting momentum again.

All arrows have been pointing towards Auburn now for more than a week in what could prove to be the most important recruiting battle of the year for the Tigers. Can Hugh Freeze close the deal and land another elite five star wide receiver recruit to follow up on Cam Coleman’s early career success?

Auburn Tigers still look set to land Jase Mathews ahead of his August 8 commitment

Rising five star wide receiver recruit talent Jase Mathews has become a consensus top tier wide receiver talent in the 2026 recruiting class and a five star ranked player according to Rivals. He was already considered a four star halfway through his impressive junior season last fall, but once he finished things up with an exclamation point, tallying over 1,100 yards, 15 touchdowns, and averaging nearly 30 yards per kick return his upside became clear to several programs around the country.

Offers started pouring in from every blue blood program in the sport, but Mathews’ focus in his recruiting battle never shifted outside the SEC. Ole Miss got in on him early (2+ years ago), so for a time the Rebels were considered the favorite. Texas A&M and LSU have been pushing this year quite a bit too. However, analysts from multiple recruiting sites have all been predicting that Mathews will ultimately choose Auburn for more than a week now.

Mathews’ commitment date is set for August 8. If Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers can land him that would be a huge boost to their class that currently sits well outside the top 50 in the nation for the 2026 recruiting team rankings according to both Rivals and 247Sports.

The Auburn Tigers already boast one of the best wide receiver groups in the nation headed up by transfer Eric Singleton Jr. and the rising sophomore duo of Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons. That may sound like Auburn is set, but Singleton is fully expected to be heading to the NFL next year. Building a strong foundation for the Tigers offense in 2026 and 2027 should be a huge priority since freshman five star QB Deuce Knight will likely be stepping in to take the reins somewhere in that time frame.

Knight has made it clear that he really wants Mathews on the team and has apparently been rather involved in trying to get him to commit. Auburn fans just need to hope that Hugh Freeze can close the deal, keeping him away from SEC rivals. If Mathews does choose Auburn that should put the Tigers firmly back on pace to finish with a strong recruiting class by the spring.
