Things got worse for the Auburn Tigers two days after their loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, in what was as much of a gut-wrenching loss as one could have during the regular season. Head coach Hugh Freeze announced a captain that caught most everyone off guard, was let go.

“Damari [Alston, RB] failed to meet the expectations and standards of our program. We love him. Wish him the best,” Freeze said Monday.

Auburn will miss what Alston brings to the run game

Alston was a captain for the Tigers and the backup running back behind Jeremiah Cobb. As a senior, many thought Alston would have a big role this season, and he did, just not the role that maybe everyone saw him having as a senior a few years ago.

RB Damari Alston’s career stats at Auburn

  • Finished 2025 with 128 rushing yards on 32 carries and one rushing touchdown.
  • Alston also had four catches for 29 receiving yards this season.
  • In his Tigers’ career, he finished with 809 rushing yards on 162 carries, six rushing touchdowns, and 143 receiving yards.

Before the 2025 season started, Hugh Freeze was very high on Alston and what he could do in this offense, and the new iteration of it with Jackson Arnold running things at quarterback.

“Damari Alston is much better than any of us gave him credit for,” Freeze said. “He just was behind Jarquez [Hunter], and Jarquez had one of those bodies where he played a lot of snaps. So I don’t think you’ve gotten to see Damari’s full potential.”

There aren’t any rumors or anything like that circulating as to why Alston was let go from the program, but based on Freeze’s comments, it sounds like something that the program just couldn’t let go of. Maybe Alston, academically, wasn’t up to their standards, or maybe something happened after the loss to Georgia that Freeze just couldn’t let slide. We do not know, so it’s important not to act like we do and spread rumors about the situation.

Alston, although he didn’t have an amazing career at Auburn, may get a shot at someone else’s program. He played just four games this year as a senior and is eligible for a redshirt season.
