Saturday afternoon was a brutal one for the Florida Gators. They had chances to beat the Georgia Bulldogs, including a deep throw that should have been ruled a catch, but they fell short, 24-20, in a game the fanbase won’t soon forget.

The offense took a step forward with quarterback DJ Lagway, doing so without three of its best wide receivers. Aidan Mizell and Vernell Brown III didn’t play the entire game, but one of the biggest young stars on the unit suffered a significant injury.

Dallas Wilson suffered a season-ending foot injury

After a tremendous start to his college career, Gators wide receiver Dallas Wilson suffered an injury to his foot that will end his season.

Wilson left the game in the first half and came out at halftime with a boot on his foot. He caught just one pass for seven yards on the day, and it could have been a huge one for the true freshman with how much the Bulldogs’ secondary has suffered this season.

Missing the rest of the season is frustrating, as Wilson has made a serious impact early on for the Gators, including a two-touchdown performance in his debut against the Texas Longhorns. On the season, Wilson has 12 catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns, but his presence at X receiver has been a huge boon for the Gators, especially with DJ Lagway showing some struggles early on this season.

Where things get interesting is with Wilson’s eligibility. He only played in four games, which means he can use his redshirt. That will allow him to retain all four years of eligibility. Now, a player with his talent level isn’t likely to stay all four years in Gainesville, but you never know how things may shake out over the next few years. It’s never bad to have eligibility available to you.

In the short term for the Gators, players like Mizell and Brown will get more of a focus, as will fellow freshman T.J. Abrams.

Nothing is certain with a new coaching staff coming in, unless interim head coach Billy Gonzales earns the job; however, there is always the danger that he could leave for the transfer portal.
