The Florida Gators have made it official on Sunday afternoon when they announced the hiring of Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall to be the next leader in Gainesville. He is viewed by many to be similar to Billy Napier, whom the Gators just fired.

Regardless of what you think of the coaching hired of Sumrall, the hope is he can take the Gators to a new level. His introductory press conference will be coming soon, but it could take some time, as Sumrall will reportedly be coaching the Green Wave throughout the College Football Playoff.

Jon Sumrall knows how important a high-powered offense is for the Florida Gators

When the Gators announced Sumrall as the head coach, it included a statement from the head coach that you’ve seen a million times. It has all the things you want to see from him, but we know it’s all about making it happen.

“The University of Florida is one of the premier programs in college football, and it’s an incredible honor to serve as the head football coach,” Sumrall said. “I believe in building a team rooted in toughness, accountability and a relentless competitive spirit. Florida has everything necessary to compete at the highest level—the resources, the support, the tradition and the passion of Gator Nation. My family and I are excited to get to work.”

Pretty standard stuff, right? However, it’s the second part of the statement that’s going to fire up the fanbase.

“One of my first priorities will be to assemble an incredible staff, including an offensive coordinator who understands that, at Florida, having an explosive offense isn’t optional – it’s mandatory.”

Everyone knows that having a high-powered offense is critical to appeasing the fanbase in Gainesville. The three national championships won by the Gators have all had elite offenses. Now, Sumrall is a defensive coach by trade, but that doesn’t mean the Gators can’t end up having the elite offense that the fanbase craves.

It will be critical to see who he brings in from a recruiting and scheme standpoint, but the acknowledgement that he needs to make it happen is such a positive sign after dealing with Napier over the last few seasons.
