After the Florida Gators fired Billy Napier on Sunday afternoon, the college football world was taken by storm. Billy Gonzales will be the interim head coach for the Gators in the final five games, six if they make a bowl game. Now that Gonzales is in charge, figuring out how to keep the ship afloat will be huge.

The on-field product will be the focus for Gonzales, as the Gators sit at 3-4 and have a great wealth of talent that could enter the transfer portal. Using the next five games to convince players to stick around will be paramount.

Multiple Gators commits schedule visits at other schools

The other aspect that Gonzales will need to mitigate is the recruiting class. When a coach gets fired during the season, recruits can end up bailing on the program because they developed relationships with the coaching staff as a whole.

Luckily for the Gators, they haven’t had any recruits decommit yet. However, we’ve seen multiple already commit to taking visits at other schools.

OT Tyler Chukuyem

One of Napier’s biggest recruiting coups was getting Chukuyem to commit before he took a major leap in the recruiting rankings. The Georgia product is now set to visit North Carolina.

Chukuyem is the No. 285 overall prospect and No. 24 OT in the 2026 recruiting class, per Rivals, and has the size and length that Napier targeted during his tenure. Don’t be surprised if Georgia ends up getting involved, as it was very involved when Chukuyem initially committed over the summer.

EDGE K.J. Ford

Napier loved to go in and recruit Texas, and his top two recruits are from the Lone Star State. The top one is wide receiver Davian Groce, but four-star edge rusher KJ Ford from Duncanville is the other. He remains committed to the Gators, but is taking another visit, this time to USC.

This isn’t much of a surprise, as many programs have been after Ford for some time. He is with the Gators for now, but everything will depend on the coaching staff.

“It depends on who the coach is,” Ford said. “It depends. Position coach, you’ve got to look at things, honestly.”

They are the first, but they won’t be the last recruits to explore greener pastures.
