Despite prioritizing LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin early on in their head coaching search, the Florida Gators continue to be proven right in hiring Jon Sumrall.

One thing that stood out immediately when it came to Sumrall’s approach was how much he prioritized recruiting. His energy is significantly different from that of former head coach Billy Napier, and that is making a serious impact with recruits.

The Gators are now trending up for multiple five-star recruits, including getting a visit from Texas Longhorns commit wide receiver Easton Royal.

Jon Sumrall achieves rare recruiting feat

Sumrall faced an uphill battle to land a great recruiting class due to taking the job on November 30th and staying with the Tulane Green Wave through the College Football Playoff. With just a few days to keep the class together, Sumrall did a phenomenal job, keeping 17 of the 19 commitments and adding one of his own. He then doubled down with the transfer portal class, with a top-15 class in each.

Sumrall was one of just six programs to do that this year, according to On3 Sports.

  • Florida Gators
  • LSU Tigers
  • Miami Hurricanes
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  • Texas A&M Aggies
  • Texas Longhorns

The Gators ranked 14th with their high school class and 12th with their transfer portal class per On3 Sports. There were some really good additions to the Gators’ roster in both, but the additions that will make an impact now come from the transfer portal in quarterback Aaron Philo and wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. Both players followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech, and are likely going to be starters going into next season.

High school recruiting is still the most important for getting to the College Football Playoff, as you still build the infrastructure of your roster with those players. Sumrall held together a class led by wide receiver Davian Groce to keep any form of momentum going into the offseason.

Sumrall has proven to everyone he’s the guy for the Gators in the short and long term, which is a good sign for the future.
