New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has come into Gainesville and was tasked with fixing a program that hasn’t performed up to their expectations since Urban Meyer was still the head coach.

When the Gators hired head coach Billy Napier ahead of the 2022 season, he set out on a mission to fix the infrastructure of the program. They needed improvements with their facilities and how the program operated. He did a great job getting everything improved, including buy in from both the players and boosters. However, they couldn’t get it done on Saturdays, going 22-23 on his watch.

With Sumrall at the helm, expectations are going to be high for the players going into this season.

When you listen to Sumrall talk, you can tell he’s a no-nonsense guy who won’t be outworked. He also isn’t afraid to say it like it is, which is a nice change of pace from Napier. Sumrall spoke to the media during the Gators’ basketball game against the Auburn Tigers, and explained that players need to earn the right to wear the logo.

“You gotta earn the logo. Man, like, we ain’t earned it yet,” said Sumrall. “We ain’t earned a thing. Like, all we’ve got to our name. We’re gonna put our freaking name on every day. So to wear the Florida Gator logo, to wear Gators across your helmet and script, or to wear the gator head, man, you got to earn that.”

It’s an interesting idea that Sumrall is implementing here for the Gators. It’s not something you can do every time because it will get old in the locker room, but in year one it can work.

It’s a new era in Gainesville, meaning everyone is on the same level going into the first offseason in Sumrall’s tenure. It’s already working, as he landed his first commitment in the 2027 recruiting class with four-star cornerback Amare Nugent committing on Saturday night during Junior Day.

It’s evident that Sumrall is doing the right things to get the program back to where it should be: national championship contenders.
