One of the biggest challenges with being a college football head coach is balancing the off-field activities with what you can do on the field.

In most of our minds, we think about what happens on Saturday’s because it’s what we see. In totality, what happens off the field is arguably more important. Teams get just 20 hours with players per week, as their schoolwork needs to be a priority. Balancing that can be a difficult task, and it’s something that new head coach Jon Sumrall understands.

Jon Sumrall wants to win football games

Coming to a 4-8 Gators team after making the College Football Playoff with the Tulane Green Wave, Sumrall has his work cut out for him. One thing that helps him in that quest to make the Gators’ first College Football Playoff is the healthy infrastructure that former head coach Billy Napier left him. While the on-field product has its issues, the program overall is in good health, especially in the classroom.

Sumrall gave an honest description during an interview on Gators Breakdown about their excellent grade point average and how he’s willing to sacrifice a little bit of that success to win games.

“There’s very direct areas where things have been going right here,” said Sumrall. “I think our academics have been really well done here. I even kid around with the team, we had a 3.6 GPA I think in the fall. I said I’d be okay with a touch lower GPA and more wins, but, you know, school matters. Let’s like, let’s win some games too.”

Nearly every coach thinks this way when it comes to getting wins on Saturday’s, but very few are willing to say it directly. Sumrall is as honest and genuine as they come, something the Gators will love over the course of time.

We know Sumrall is willing to do whatever it takes to win, and he’s proving that consistently.
