‘He’s always been high on Florida’ — National analyst loves the Gators’ position with elite five-star recruit
Jon Sumrall is being aggressive when it comes to recruiting the high school ranks
Recruiting has been a sore spot for the Florida Gators over the past decade.
While it hasn’t been a disaster by any means, it’s been very inconsistent. Jim McElwain wasn’t the best recruiter. Dan Mullen was fired for, among other reasons, not being committed to the recruiting process, and Billy Napier kept finishing second.
With Jon Sumrall being in the building for nearly two months, you can already see and feel the difference. He landed his first commit in the 2027 class in four-star cornerback Amare Nugent, and is gaining ground on others, including five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller.
Florida Gators in great position with five-star QB Champ Monds
One thing Sumrall is doing will make Gator fans happy: be aggressive in pursuing quarterbacks. The Gators are in the final four for five-star and No. 1 quarterback Elijah Haven, but they aren’t stopping there. Fellow five-star Champ Monds is also at the top of their list, and they are positioning themselves well.
On3 Sports’ recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong is really impressed with how the Gators have positioned themselves for Monds.
“I had a chance to talk to Champ Monds after the visit, and I love where the Gators are positioned early in his process,” said Wiltfong. “He’s always been high on Florida before coach Sumrall and company got there, but he talked about Coach Sumrall his vision for winning championships. He said the environment was great. He really enjoyed his time around the new staff, some of the former staff that’s there, and he’s seen the facilities. He’s been inside the swamp.
“This visit was more getting to know each other, getting to have more dialogue and conversation with the Florida staff, and he really enjoyed that. Likes the caliber of recruits, Florida’s in on what the opportunity to play in the SEC is enticing, and it’s close to home, so Florida’s in the thick of the conversation for champ mines.”
The one thing you continue to hear about this new staff is how much players and recruits enjoy being around them. It’s something thatis continued from last year, when Napier did a great job of getting his players to play for him. Sumrall is more of a rah-rah kind of coach, but he has that same effect, and it was evident at both Troy and Tulane.
If the Gators can land either Monds or Haven, it would be a huge coup.
