The Florida Gators have had a brutal 2025 season.

They sit at 3-6 and are one loss away from missing a bowl game for the second time in the last four seasons. Now that they have fired head coach Billy Napier, it’s about finishing up the season and moving on to find the next head coach.

This weekend, the Gators will face the top candidate for their head coaching job in Lane Kiffin of the Ole Miss Rebels.

Result of Saturday’s Florida/Ole Miss game could decide the next Gators HC

The interesting part of this game is whether the Gators’ win could ultimately decide whether they get their head coach of choice.

The goal is for Kiffin to take the job, but a lot needs to happen before we get there. One thing going in the Gators’ favor is that Kiffin knows the Florida job is one of the best, and he said as much on Monday.

“You can’t stockpile [meaning the] Blue Bloods you want to call it or refer to it,” Kiffin said on Monday. “But there are still things there where you’re still going to struggle to beat those guys. Kids are still recruited, and they see size of stadiums and tradition and Heismans and national championships, and then your location to talent. So, I think all those are in there, but it’s slid a little over time. I think when that question was probably: What is your assistant coach’s pool? Now it’s: What is your player pool?”

Here’s the tough part: Ole Miss only has one loss and a 9-1 record, meaning a trip to the College Football Playoff is almost a guarantee at this point. Do the Gators want to wait that long for Kiffin to finish a playoff run? A loss to Ole Miss on Saturday will make the wait excruciatingly long, with early signing day at the beginning of December and the transfer portal at the beginning of the year.

If the Gators end up winning, will it turn them on the idea of hiring Kiffin? This team is in disarray, and the injuries are mounting in a major way. If they end up beating the Rebels, especially in The Grove, how does that change the perception? Will they end up souring on Kiffin, since he loses one or two games per year that he shouldn’t? It’s certainly a possibility.

As things stand, Saturday’s game could have a serious impact on the Gators’ future, and who knows if it will be good or bad.
